August 28 | Assistance for Deceased Military Retirees

Buckley AFB - Military Retiree Activities Office (RAO)

RAOs are established in accordance with Air Force Instruction 36-3106. The primary mission of the Buckley AFB RAO is to provide a resource military retirees, spouses and surviving spouses may rely on to receive assistance related to their military entitlements and benefits. The RAO can provide casualty related assistance when a military retiree/veteran or the spouse of a military retiree/veteran dies.
Below are a few of the areas where we can provide help:
  • We can put you in touch with a military base Casualty Assistance Representative (CAR)
  • We can put you in touch with the Defense Finance & Accounting Service (DFAS) to address required actions related to a military pension, the Survivor Benefit Plan (SBP), etc.
  • We can put you in touch with a local Veteran Services Officer (VSO) who is an expert in dealing with the U.S. Department of Veteran’s Affairs (VA)
  • We can put you in touch with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to address required actions related to VA Disability Payments, Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC), etc.
  • We can help you obtain copies of military records such as a DD 214
  • We can tell you how to locate, contact and make an appointment with the nearest facility where you can turn in the deceased’s military ID card or renew an expired military ID card
  • We can put you in touch with the base legal office to create/update a will, get documents notarized, etc.

Of course the RAO can also help with inquiries/issues not related to casualty assistance such as Tricare, Tricare for Life, Federal Employee Dental & Vision Insurance Plan (FEDVIP), base facilities (such as the pharmacy, commissary, & exchange), base access, etc.
The Buckley AFB RAO is staffed completely with volunteers, all military retirees themselves. We assist military retirees and surviving spouses of all military branches. We are not fully manned Mon-Fri due to the limited number of volunteers so leave a voice mail - someone will return your call, usually within 24-48 hours.
While the RAO was established to support military retirees (those who have served in the military for 20 or more years) we are always happy to provide whatever assistance we can to any Veteran, from any branch of the military, with issues related to their military service.
