CFDA lobbyists are monitoring a bill introduced in the state legislature

Senate Bill 18-234, entitled "Human Remains Disposition Sale Businesses", makes it unlawful under the 'Mortuary Science Code' for a person to own more than a 10% indirect interest in a funeral establishment or crematory while simultaneously owning interest in a nontransplant tissue bank. The bill prohibits an entity from profiting from the transfer, sale, storage, or leasing of human remains.

This legislation, sponsored by Senators Don Coram and Larry Crowder, is a measure to resolve conflicts of interest and require separation between the operation of funeral establishments and crematories, and the business of body donation, resulting from problems that occurred at Sunset Mesa Funeral Directors.
