James L. “Jim” Schmidt, CMSP, long-time owner of Spellman-Schmidt Mortuary in Wray, is retiring in April.
Jim is well known around the Wray community as “Digger”. He is a 1971 graduate of the Kentucky School of Mortuary Science and attended Green River Community College in Auburn, Washington and Northeastern Jr. College, at Sterling.
He began his career in funeral service in 1968 and began working in Wray with Lockwood-Spellman Mortuary in March 1975. He purchased the funeral home in 1978 from his uncle, Ralph Spellman.
Schmidt has been active in his profession and served as President of the Colorado Funeral Directors Association in 2000. He is a Certified Mortuary Science Practitioner (CMSP) and holds funeral director licenses in Kansas and Nebraska. He also served as deputy Yuma County Coroner for more than 25 years. He has been an active member of many community organizations; served as president of the Wray Chamber of Commerce, Wray Rotary Club and Wray Country Club. He also served for on the Wray Community District Hospital Board and was a member of the Wray Volunteer Fire Department.
The funeral establishment has a new owner and new name, Schmidt-Jones Funeral Home, operated by Javan Jones, CMSP.
A retirement party will be held in Jim’s honor on Friday, April 10, 2015, from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM at the Schmidt-Jones Funeral Home, 427 Adams Street, Wray, CO 80758.
